Orcia Valley postcards: San Quirico and Monticchiello
South of the province of Siena, in the magnificent Val d’Orcia Unesco Heritage since 2004, we find the village of San Quirico d’Orcia, built on top of a small hill above the remains of the ancient village of Osenna halfway between Pienza and Bagno Vignoni. To visit the Horti Leonini, dating back to 1581, which owes its name to its owner, Diomede Leoni, to whom Francesco I de ‘Medici had donated the land on which they stand. They still retain the original structure and represent a classic model of Italian garden, repeatedly taken as a model in the following centuries (free admission). Inside the walls the Church of La Collegiata with its three Romanesque portals, the Palazzo Chigi, the Church of San Francesco with a Madonna by Andrea della Robbia and the small and charming Church of Santa Maria dell’Assunta. A few kilometers from Monticchiello, a small village with an extraordinary fascination of Etruscan and Roman origins, which was already a fortified hamlet just before the year 1000. In June 1233 Monticchiello swears loyalty to the Republic of Siena becoming a free federated municipality, dating back to that period the construction of the high walls almost completely intact, consisting of four towers and the quarter to form the defensive quadrilateral. The church of Saints Leonardo and Cristoforo is absolutely worth a visit. Inside there is a huge San Cristoforo of the school of Simone Martini, a Virgin with Child by Pietro Lorenzetti dated 1320 and a wooden crucifix of the Sienese school.

We will take care of getting you from your accommodation and bring you back at the end with our comfortable minivan. Our drivers are very professional, they are not guides – a licensed person and a special extra price would be required by law – but they will certainly be able to recommend the best restaurants and souvenir shops.
